# Export videos, GIFs, and screenshots

> Export Open Recorder projects as MOV, MP4, or animated GIF with resolution, frame rate, and quality options, or save composed screenshots as PNG.

Open Recorder exports from the editor toolbar. Video projects open the export dialog. Screenshots open the screenshot editor's Export menu.

## Export a video

1. Open a recording in the editor.
2. Click **Export** in the top-right of the editor toolbar.
3. Choose a **Format** and the options for that format.
4. Click **Export Video**.
5. When rendering finishes, choose where to save the file in the save panel.

The export includes your crop, background, frame styling, cursor overlay, timeline speed and deletion edits, zoom effects, and camera layout settings.

### Movie options (MOV and MP4)

| **Resolution**         | 480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K | 1080p   |
| **Frame Rate**         | 15, 24, 30, 60 FPS    | 30 FPS  |
| **Quality** (MP4 only) | Low, Medium, High     | High    |

Resolution presets scale the short edge of the output to 480, 720, 1080, or 2160 pixels.

### GIF options

| Setting        | Options                                                                             | Default |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------- |
| **Size**       | Medium (480 px short edge), Large (720 px short edge), Original (source dimensions) | Medium  |
| **Frame Rate** | 15, 20, 25, 30 FPS                                                                  | 15 FPS  |
| **Loop**       | On repeats continuously. Off plays once.                                            |         |

### Captions

If the project has captions, the dialog shows an **Include captions** toggle. See [Captions](/editing/captions#include-captions-on-export).

### During and after export

* The dialog shows rendering progress as a percentage. Click **Cancel Export** to stop rendering.
* After saving, click **Show in Finder** to reveal the file, or **Done** to close the dialog.
* If you cancel the save panel after rendering, Open Recorder keeps the rendered file. Click **Save Again** to save it without rendering again, or **Discard Export** to close the dialog without saving.

## Export a screenshot

Open a screenshot in the editor and click **Export** to open the Export menu:

| **Save PNG**           | <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>S</kbd>              | Saves the composed PNG next to the source screenshot and copies it to the clipboard. |
| **Save PNG As…**       | <kbd>⇧</kbd> <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>S</kbd> | Opens a save panel so you can choose a location and filename.                        |
| **Copy PNG and Close** | <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>C</kbd>              | Copies the composed PNG to the clipboard and closes the editor.                      |
