Before you start a recording or take a screenshot, Open Recorder asks you to choose a capture source — the part of your screen that will be captured. There are three source types: Screen (a full display), Window (a single app window), and Area (a hand-drawn rectangular region). The source you choose applies to both recordings and screenshots, and you can change it freely before starting any capture.Documentation Index

Screen capture
Screen capture records or screenshots your entire display. If you have more than one monitor connected, Open Recorder lists each display separately so you can pick the one you want. When you select a screen, Open Recorder briefly flashes the display to confirm your selection before returning you to the capture controls.Window capture
Window capture lets you focus on a single app window, excluding everything else on screen. Open Recorder lists all on-screen windows and shows a live thumbnail for each so you can identify the right one. The window must already be open and visible before you start capture setup. If the window closes or is replaced after you select it, Open Recorder will alert you to refresh sources and pick again.Open Recorder’s own windows are excluded from window capture — you cannot record or screenshot the Open Recorder UI itself.
Area capture
Area capture lets you draw a precise rectangular region anywhere on screen. When you choose Area, a selection overlay appears across your display. Drag to define the region you want to capture, then confirm to proceed. For screenshots, the capture fires immediately after you confirm the area. For recordings, the defined area is saved as your source and recording starts after the countdown.Switching sources
You can switch between source types at any time before starting a recording or taking a screenshot. Open the source picker in the capture HUD to change the active source type, or click Refresh in the source selector to reload the list of available displays and windows. The source list will be empty until macOS Screen Recording permission is granted. Open Settings → Permissions → Screen Recording inside Open Recorder to open the relevant macOS privacy pane, then restart the app for the permission to take effect.
